Cannington is located in the City of Canning, along the Albany Highway 13 Kilometres south east of Perth.

The area has a resident population of about 4000 and covers an area of 4.1 square kilometres.

It is bounded by Nicholson Road to the south-east, the Armadale railway line to the northeast, Mills and Burton Streets to the northwest, and Fleming Avenue and the Canning River to the southwest. Plus, Albany Highway runs north-south through the western part of the area and Leach Highway is located to the north.

One of the Perth metropolitan area's largest shopping complexes, Westfield Carousel is located within the area, and contains a cinema complex. Also, a large range of shops and warehouses, as well as the City of Canning council offices are located along Albany Highway. Bentley Hospital is located on Mills Street just outside the area's north western boundary.

The Canning River Regional Park runs alongside the riverbank, with walking tracks and picnic facilities located nearby, also the Woodloes Museum is located within the park in a restored 1874 house. Various sports and leisure facilities, including soccer fields, ten-pin bowling and an indoor athletics centre are located in the area, and the Canning River Eco Education Centre, CREEC, is located within the Canning River Regional Park near the Kent Street Weir.

The Canning Show is organised and operated by the Canning Agricultural, Horticultural and Recreational Society Inc. and is held each year during early November.

The City of Canning showgrounds, including the Cannington Raceway, a greyhound racetrack are located in the area, just off Albany Highway.
