Byford is in the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, 38 kilometres south-east of Perth on the South West Highway.
Located at the foot of the Darling Scarp, the area has a population of about 3500 which is growing rapidly. It was first established as a location on the Armadale rail line in 1906 and is a semi rural area with a strong agricultural history and sheep grazing, fruit growing, cattle and dairy farming and equine activities are still conducted within the area.
It is a stop on the Australind train from Perth to Bunbury. The Darling Scarp Regional Park is located to the east and Cohunu Koala Park is nearby. Also, the State Animal Quarantine Station is located in the area
