Bencubbin
Bencubbin is located in the North Eastern Wheatbelt, 275 kilometres
north-east of Perth in the Shire of Mount Marshall.
The town has a population of approximately 650, including families who live on nearby farms. Several small enterprises operating in the town provide services, including a mechanical workshop, panel beater, hotel, hardware (which also supplies fuel), a post office/newsagent, a general store, a cafe and dress shop.
other services available within the town include a police station, silver chain medical post, telecentre and a community recreation centre. Also, weekend sport is strongly supported within the community and various sports are played throughout the year.
The town is the administrative centre of the Shire of Mt Marshall, and many of the original pioneer buildings constructed between 1911 and 1929 still exist today. These include the hotel, the Sandalwood Shops, the Bank of NSW, the old Police station and Bencubbin school.
Visitors can access the museum located in the historical police station located on Hammond Street and browse through historical records collected from throughout the Mt Marshall region. Contact the Shire office to obtain access to the building.
Also, the Pioneer Wells can be visited, from which local families obtained water for their own use and for their livestock, in the days before piped scheme water was available.
The Mt Marshall Show is organised by the Mt Marshall & Districts Agricultural Society and takes place each year during March.
Sandalwood cutters and stockmen accessed the area after 1836, although the first permanent settlers did not arrive until 1908. The name 'Bencubbin' originates from the Aboriginal word for 'place of the snakes'.
