Western Australia
Augusta is located on the south-west coast tip of Western Australia where the Blackwood River discharges into Flinders Bay approximately 270km south-southwest of Perth.

It is a popular holiday and retirement destination with a resident population of about 1100. It is the nearest town to Cape Leeuwin, and is located on the farthest south-west corner of the state at an average elevation of 36 metres above sea level.

The third oldest settlement in Western Australia, Augusta was established in 1830 when the first European settlers arrived in the area.

Augusta enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate and boasts brilliant coastal scenery. Located at the mouth of the Blackwood River, the town has some of the best beaches in the state, which are ideal for swimming, fishing and other aquatic activities. The Augusta River Festival is held each year during March.

The region contains many pleasant scenes in which the coastline blends with the Blackwood River and Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park to create a landscape that is a pleasure to view.

From June through to September each year Augusta is alive with whale song. Flinders Bay is protected from the north-westerly wind by Cape Leeuwin, making it a perfect location for whale watching.

Southern Right and Humpback Whales can be observed off the coast as they participate in one of natures longest migrations from the polar waters located to the south to the warmer equatorial waters to the north. Local whale watching charters provide opportunities for memorable encounters with the whales, dolphins and New Zealand Fur Seals.

Jewel Cave is located 8km north of Augusta on Caves Road, and is one of the most decorated caves in the world. The magnificent formations and lofty chambers located within the cave are wonderful. Guided tours of the cave are conducted each day between 9.30am - 10.30am - 11.30am - 12.30pm - 1.30pm - 2.30pm - 3.30pm.

The Augusta River Festival is held in early March. Visit the festival website for details.
