Atwell is located in the City of Cockburn, 21 kilometres south of Perth.
Development of the area began in the early 1990s through the creation of local communities such as Beeliar Parklands, Atwell Waters, and Harvest Lakes. Only small sections in the south of the area still remain undeveloped.
The community is located to the east of the Kwinana Freeway. Atwell Reserve and Freshwater Reserve are located within the area, while Mather Reserve, plus several other reserves are located to the east of Tapper Road.
